Zahir Howaida was a pioneering yet often overlooked figure of Afghanistan’s golden age of music. His debut album introduced a daring fusion of accordion with Kharabati instruments such as the sitar, harmonium, and tabla. A fierce critic of Afghan music and society, he consistently challenged artistic norms and political expectations. Born into a working-class Shia family in Daykundi, he moved to Kabul and quickly distinguished himself as a vocalist and mandolin player. While studying at Isteqlal High School, he developed a fascination with social theory—reading authors like Maxim Gorky—and became involved in theater. From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, his voice was regularly heard on Radio Kabul’s theatrical broadcasts.
In the early 1970s, he was selected as one of only five Afghans to study abroad and enrolled at the Tchaikovsky Institute in Moscow, becoming one of the first Afghans formally trained in operatic and classical music. His operatic style can be heard in this song, where it merges with accordion and tabla. During his travels in Tajikistan and Iran, he helped popularize poets like Abdul Qasem Laghati through songs such as Kamar Bareek. Known for resisting political pressure, he defied Daud Khan’s mandates by recording on cassette rather than performing on state radio. Under the PDPA government, he hosted music programs on Meli TV and mentored emerging artists.
After 1992, he lived in India and later Germany, spending his final years in Hamburg. He passed away on March 5, 2012, leaving behind a lasting legacy of musical innovation and social critique.
