Commentary: Hajji Saifo was an Afghan folkloric singer celebrated for his raw, unfiltered lyrics and spontaneous performances. A gifted poet, he attended Habibia School before mastering the tanbur under rubab virtuoso Ustad Omar in Kabul’s historic Kharabat district. His electrifying stage presence made him both a beloved and controversial figure. Rejecting rehearsed music, he thrived on improvisation, reshaping songs mid-performance to create an unpredictable and deeply emotional experience.
Haji Saifo is credited with popularizing Masoma Silsa Ladar, a song that remains influential in Afghan music today. His bold style, mastery of traditional instruments, and unique blend of passionate, comedic, and moralistic storytelling captivated audiences.
Beyond music, Haji Saifo carried a deeply personal symbol—a gold earring gifted by his mother in childhood, which he never removed. His fearless expression, however, may have led to his tragic end. He was reportedly shot after offending guests at a Taliban wedding. Though his life was cut short, his legacy as a daring and unapologetic voice of Afghan folklore lives on.
