Ustad Natu, also known as Ustad Ghulam Nabi Natu, was a respected Afghan classical and traditional musician associated with the historic Kharabat musical tradition of Kabul. He belonged to the early generation of professional Afghan master musicians who helped preserve classical vocal and ghazal traditions rooted in Hindustani raga performance and Persian poetic repertoire.
Ustad Natu was trained within the Kharabat musical lineage, a hereditary community of musicians that shaped much of Afghanistan’s classical music culture. Historical accounts place him among artists influenced by the musical school established by Ustad Qasim, one of the founders of modern Afghan classical music. Through this lineage, Nato received training in classical vocal technique, traditional composition styles, and performance practices that blended Afghan folk elements with South Asian classical structures.
He was active during Afghanistan’s early recording era and is believed to have participated in performances and recordings associated with the development of the country’s commercial music industry during the mid-20th century. Despite his respected status within classical music circles, surviving commercial recordings of Ustad Nato remain extremely rare.
Archival evidence confirms that Ustad Natu recorded one known studio album released through Music Center, making it one of the few documented commercial releases of his work. Because of the limited number of surviving recordings, existing releases hold significant historical and cultural value within Afghan music preservation efforts.
Ustad Natu is remembered today as part of the foundational generation of ustads whose work helped sustain Afghanistan’s classical and traditional music heritage and influenced later generations of Afghan vocalists and musicians.
