Qamargul (قمرگل) was one of the most influential female voices in Afghan Pashto music and a pioneering figure in the history of women’s performance in Afghanistan. Born on 27 Jadi 1330 in Shaga village, Nangarhar, she began singing at a young age in local gatherings before joining Radio Afghanistan in the late 1340s, where her powerful voice quickly brought her national recognition among both Pashto- and Dari-speaking audiences.
Throughout her long career, Qamargul recorded approximately 320 radio songs and appeared in more than 65 television performances, with many of her compositions written by her husband, the Pashto poet and composer Zakhil. Her repertoire consisted primarily of Pashto songs, with a smaller number recorded in Dari. She toured extensively across Afghanistan and performed internationally in countries including India, Pakistan, Yugoslavia, and the former Soviet Union. In recognition of her artistic contributions, she received the Afghan Arts Medal in 1350 and later a diploma from the Afghan Artists Union.
Qamargul remained an enduring symbol of Afghan musical heritage and the advancement of women in the arts until her passing on 18 Qaws 1401 (2022) in Toronto, Canada. Her recordings preserved in Radio Afghanistan and television archives continue to represent a foundational chapter in the history of Afghan music.
