Parastoo is a well-known Afghan female musician from the 1970s. Born as Nooria into a religious family, she was deeply passionate about becoming a singer. Early in her career, she performed under the pseudonym "Soma," releasing a few cassettes under that name. She studied music with masters such as Ustad Rahim Baksh and Ustad Kheyal. A few years later, she adopted the name Parasto, and this cassette marks her first release under her new name and the official start of her career. A year or two after this release, she married Rahim Mehryar, and together they became one of Afghanistan’s iconic musical power couples in the 1980s and later in the diaspora during the 1990s.
