Ustad Amani (Amanullah), born in 1332 SH (1953/54) in Charikar, Parwan, was one of Afghanistan’s beloved folk vocalists, celebrated for his expressive voice and performances deeply rooted in local musical traditions. Coming from a musical family of tanbur players, he began singing in childhood and gradually gained recognition through wedding performances and community gatherings before recording songs for Radio Afghanistan and national television. Encouraged by musicians of Kabul’s historic Kharabat musical community—including praise from Ustad Sarahang—Amani further refined his understanding of classical ragas while continuing to perform folk-inspired repertoire.

Between the 1970s and 1992, Ustad Amani recorded approximately 80 songs for Radio Television Kabul, some composed by himself, and collaborated with renowned artists such as Ustad Sarahang, Ustad Khayal, and Nainawaz. His distinctive vocal style, often incorporating qawwali-influenced singing techniques, helped make him widely popular not only across Afghanistan but also throughout the Afghan diaspora. His recordings—broadcast through radio, television, and private cassette studios—remain preserved in national archives and private collections.

During the 1990s, Amani performed internationally, presenting concerts in Russia, the United Kingdom, India, the United States, and Pakistan. While living as a refugee in Pakistan, he suffered a stroke that resulted in aphasia, affecting his ability to communicate and sing. Despite this hardship, he occasionally participated in performances in post-2001 Afghanistan and received several honors and awards between 2001 and 2021 recognizing his lasting contributions to Afghan musical heritage. Remembered for his humility and dedication to traditional Afghan music, Ustad Amani remains a cherished people’s artist whose recordings continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
